excelent idea and I like how it turned out. Have you considered gluing two fancy woods together and carve through one to get to the other wood below? could make some really interesting pendants. Or maybe stick with one type of wood but two stains (applied with a q-tip or something) to highlight the difference in hight a bit more. Or maybe use the q-tip to apply glue to the higher parts and silver leaf it... hmm.. now I'm gonna have to go play with some of these ideas..

Love your idea about glueing two types of wood, I think I'm going to try this ) I also want to make a wood carving with bone or horn or maybe mother-of-pearls inlay.
I used a Dremel 300 rotary tool with various dental burrs.
